Thut’s score 'Two Strings and Boxes' is written for a pair of zithers, a type of instrument usually placed on a table. Here the tables are replaced by cardboard boxes not only serving as tabletops but also allowing the generation of noises and playing from various angles in relation to the microphone/audience.
The porosity of the score and the multi functionality of the boxes – table, vehicle, generator – widens the possibilities of the recording/performance situation and reveal the site's specificities. The coupled interpretation by Chang and Thut invites listening in an atmosphere of gradualness and deceleration.

Stefan Thut is a composer and cellist working and living in Solothurn (CH) and abroad. His compositional strategies involve permeable systems being relatively determined but still unpredictable in their results. Apart from instrumental works he has written several text scores that serve as a template for sound recording. His scores have been realised at the Kunstraum Düsseldorf (2007), at Kid Ailack Concert Hall, Tokyo (2007/09), at the Diapason Gallery, New York (2010) and at Holywell Music Room, Oxford (2012). As an interpreter he has performed many compositions by representative and affiliated composers of the Wandelweiser editions.

Berlin-based composer-performer Johnny Chang engages in extended explorations surrounding the relationship of sound/silence and the in-between areas of improvisation, composition, performance and listening. His articulated performances have been featured in festivals, residencies and experimental music series in Europe, North America and New Zealand. Since November 2010, Johnny Chang and Koen Nutters have initiated and co-curate Konzert Minimal which presents performances and events centred around the music of the Wandelweiser group.
